Seadog, Staked means bending the screw heads into the starter cover so it can't move. I don't know how to do this without damaging anything so I won't give any advice on that but I know the cover should not move and could cause problems if it does. I've seen pics on the forum of covers that have slid and it wasn't pretty.

Thanks, Mike. Those screws were not ultra tight when I loosened them. I have a lot of cleaning to do before the new parts arrive and I can put it all back together, but maybe a little Loctite on those threads would be a good idea.

You have to make the cover immovable.

Staking is where a punch or chisel is used to deform the screw head and the metal around it so that they do not work loose. You can see the horizontal marks on the screws and casing in your picture where they were staked but it looks like they have been unscrewed and not tightened to the same degree.

As you can see in my pic, nasty things happen when the screws come loose. I think that the screw heads are supposed to beneath the outer cover as they are countersunk and fit into countersunk holes in the main body. The semicircular cutouts in the outer cover are to allow you to get a tool in to stake the screw heads into the grooves.

Thank you, G-Man. I understand. When I put this back together, I'm going to use Loctite liberally. I'm also thinking that it might be better to replace the cover. As you can see in my photo, the outer jacket has moved - I think it was because it was scuffing; scuffing can be seen in the photo and is more apparent now that the part is clean. Also, the outer jacket is raised off of the cover. I believe that this is because there are tiny bits of metal - possibly from the rollers - and bits of broken springs wedged in there. I've removed as many as possible, but there are more that I cannot reach. This is probably why the jacket is scuffed. I hate wasting a part or the money for it, but I think it may be better to start anew with this one. I'll try to find new screws as well. I'm not sure about staking them, but I can wield a chisel as well as anyone, I suppose. The screws should be tightened evenly. Do you suppose there's a torque value for them?

Just tighten them as per a medium grade M6 fastener ....

If you don't have a torque wrench just tighten them by feel or use an impact driver and use a punch or sharp chisel on the edge of the screw head to stake it. Loctite is useful but may make life harder if you ever want to dismantle.
