ca77 charging system

Post by pieeater » Sun Jan 25, 2015 1:20 pm

I have been reading some of the posts regarding the charging system ( or none charging system if you like ) on the Dream.
I am back working on the bike after a two month lay off due to the weather, its been too cold to go into the shed.
Decided to test out the charging system, I am familiar with this type of system its very similar to the old British two strokes were a second output is connected to the rectifier when the lights are on to "regulate" the charging.
I always like to connect an ammeter to test if the battery is being charged when its running.
When the ignition is switched on the ammeter goes to discharge about 3 amps when the engine is started it only comes back 1 amp to 2 amp discharge. When the head lamp is switched on it goes to 7 amp discharge. A volt meter shows 12.7 volt ignition off 12.2 ign on and 12.4 running. Revving up doesn't make much difference.
I have fitted a solid state rec and its the same.
If I disconnect the red wire from the rec and connect it to a bulb it will light so its charging but only just and not enough to prevent the battery from discharging over time.
I will have to rewind the stator coils. Has anyone done this.
if its not broke don't fix it.

You have what it is designed to do if you have the CB72(L) rotor.
If you want more charge change to the CB72 stator.
When we rode these bikes in the early years we rode them ALL THE TIME and we would boil the battery dry rather quickly and of course we/some didn't check the fluid level often.
HONDA lowered the magnetism of the rotor to cure this. .........lm

The battery is new and has just been fully charged. May be that's why its showing discharge on the ammeter possibly the battery voltage has to drop below the alternator output before it starts to charge. Seems a bit strange that it doesn't trickle charge
What I might do then is disconnect the pink wire out of the engine and connect it to the yellow wire so its getting full charge all the time. I could put a switch on the pink wire so I can switch it off if need be.
Thanks Derek

I'll bet that if that worked HONDA would have done it.
Please just ignore what I posted earlier. .....lm

If you connect the pink to yellow I would replace the rectifier with a regulator/rectifier to prevent a possible overcharge situation.

I have tried every possible combination - all with the same result. The service manual indicates a 3amp charge is correct (barely enough to keep up with the headlight and taillight). . I get about the same results you get - except my charging voltage will go up as the rpm increases. I can see close to 13VDC at higher rpm's (headlight off - yellow and pink together).

I have tied the pink wire to the yellow permanently.

Try a Kohler solid state regulator/rectifier. That solves the over charging problem (if there is one).

Had another go at this charging problem today and its fixed now.
With the bike switched off I was disconnecting the wires that come from the alternator and the yellow wire touched earth and it sparked. Hello that's not right. I disconnected all the wire and found the brown wire coming from the rectifier to the alternator was live showing 5 volts.
The recs gone. So I replaced the rec with a solid state one ( I had done this once before but it didn't work any better ) with the new rec fitted its cured the brown going to earth through the alternator. It still wasn't charging as it should then I found a poor connection on the red wire from the rec to the battery, a lucar connector not crimped properly. It charges now fine.
Thanks for the help.
