CL77 Snuff or Nots vs VW Ex Tips

Post by sibes67 » Sat Nov 01, 2014 7:31 am

Saw a past thread about this, but not real sure how this works. I can buy used VW tips, and I assume one just uses the inner baffles from them, cut to proper length, and utilize current holes (which my 66' has) for attaching near end of straight pipes.

current snuff or nots on Ebay run $70 + . I prefer the look of straight pipes, but with a tad more of a subdued sound. Will the VW exhaust tips accomplish that in anyone's opinion?
Any pics on this installation would be helpful too.

Fella I called who deals in nothing but VW's, new and old parts, has tons of them. New for $25 a pair, used no price yet but I imagine $15 or less. Thanks.

Or you could make your own snuffs for about 6 bucks.

VW tips

Ron,
Years ago I did exactly that with the VDub tips as a member suggested. My 66 CL had straight pipes when I got it, and as it went, they were too loud for me and the neighborhood. For like cheap I was able to grind off the baffle weld, extract the baffle and insert them into the exhaust pipe ends. I think the upper pipe I pre bent the baffle to allow for easier fitment (at the bend around the shocks) but it worked like a charm and brought the noise level down considerably. The fit is snug enough that no fasteners were needed. Well, at least they haven't blown out yet in 6 years.
