Shouldered Steel Rims

Post by dcarp » Sat Sep 01, 2007 4:48 pm

Greetings - My '65 CB77 has shouldered (DID) steel rims. Were these the originals? I am restoring this bike, and will not waste my time getting them re-chromed if they are not. I sure appreciate the help from all of you guys on this website.

The only shouldered steel rims I know of were used on the CL77 scramblers. These rims were 19 inch, front and rear. Are your rims 18" or 19". If they are 19" then you probably have CL77 wheels on your bike.

Buck - Thanks for the tip. They are indeed 19" wheels, front and rear, so you must be right. Other than the larger rim size, where the hubs, backing plates, etc. the same as on the CB? Thanks for your help.

The front and rear hubs should be the same on CB77's and CL77's. The difference being 19" shouldered rims and longer spokes of course on the CL77.

Dcarp, It also depends on what year CL77 they're from. The '65's had a smaller brake hub and drum on both front and rear than the '66-'68 models. You can tell if the brakes are dual cam action. They are the larger models.

I forgot to mention that the early CL77's had 6"diameter hubs with single leading shoe brakes. The later model CL77's were changed to double leading shoe brakes with 8" diameter hubs after S/N CL77F-1014496. These 8" hubs should be correct hubs for your 65 CB77.
