Broken Head stud

Post by cribbs74 » Wed Aug 29, 2007 12:03 pm

Anyone had any success removing a broken exhaust stud?

PO broke it off and just left it as is. Problem is the heat has super hardened the stud and I cannot drill it out!. I was hoping to use an easy out once drilled.

It's broken down inside the head so vice grips are out of the question. Maybe a harder bit? any help is much appreciated.

Nobody has dealt with this before? At the very least can someone recommend a really good drill bit? I have dulled out quite a few trying to drill this stud out.

I've had many engines come in with broken bolts/studs and have drilled them out. I have high quality drills and start with a 1/8 followed by slightly larger and larger ones until I can collapse the thin amount left. I quit using easy outs a long time back because all to often they break and now ya have metal in the hole that ya can't drill. Often by the time the broken part is removed so are most of the aluminum threads so I Heli-Coil the hole. Being this is an exhaust stud ya may want to put some J B Weld on the threads of the new stud. ..............lm
