Low compression right side after 8 years moth balled

Post by Geeky160 » Sun Jul 06, 2014 3:02 pm

Well I tried to start my CL77 this weekend with no luck. It sat in the garage for 8 years. In that time I changed the oil 3 times and kicked the starter about every 6 months. I drained the carbs and fuel tank when I moth balled it too.

I checked out the carbs jets etc. they looked fine. New fuel line, filters, points, tires and battery. Changed the oil to T6 and performed the tune recipe.

When I was ready to gas up and start, the left cylinder fired but no right cylinder. I went round and round with the carb, verified spark but the plug was dry so I started thinking compression. Sur enough, with the left plug out there is very little compression on the right. I dumped some oil down the spark plug hole and didn’t notice much change. I looked in the plughole and didn’t see a hole in the piston.

I put my hand over the right exhaust and it feels like air is drawing in at some point then going back out. Both valves are allowing the correct gap when not actuating so I don’t think it’s that.

The bike ran on both cylinders when I put it up. I wonder if I have a stuck or not seating exhaust valve? I squirted some oil under the valve caps and kicked with both plugs removed to try and loosen anything that might be stuck.

I do have another donor engine with good sleeves and piston all though it’s not the big bore kit like I currently am running.

Any ideas before I start thinking about pulling the motor in preperation?

If the plug was dry I would more likely lean toward no fuel. Low or no compression should still yeild a wet plug. Did you check compression with the throttle and choke open? I would check the petcock for blockage and also the carb bowl vent.

I soaked that side in marvel Mystery oil for 4 days as suggested on another site. I changed the oil and installed new plugs last night.

Fired him up today. Right side only fired when goosing the gas the first few heat/cool cycles. Finally started running on both but popping out the inflicted side. Took him for a spin around the neighborhood and ran really good. Lots of power compared to the CB160. Still giving me trouble starting and ideling. Checked the points setting and tappet settings, they were still good. Some smoke coming from the inficted side when I rev. I'm thinking I need to go through the carbs again.

sounds like a plugged idle jet, or a sticky float.
