with headlight on, no brakes, both tail filaments lit

Post by wormohead » Mon Jun 23, 2014 7:02 pm

ok weird. need a place to start.

brake light works correctly when headlight is not on, but with headlight on and no brake actuated, the tail light lights up both filaments. bulb is ok, brake actuator is ok. headlight works correctly on both high and low beam.

any ideas?

thanks mike,

will try that after work tom. just rebuilt the carb and fired it, a bit rough and will set mixture and check points etc.

i picked up 2 dreams, one to restore to factory, the other was painted camo, black rims and a solo seat. one will go, but both were electrical nighmares and the previous "mechanic" had mixed sae and metric without retapping....grounded out starter switch, etc. wife not happy but hey!!

anyway, thank you and i'll post more challenges as I proceed.

tried grounding bulb socket at base as well as addtl ground on housing.

on "run" setting when brake is actuated one filaments lights, however on headlight on position "no brakes" both filaments light with nothing else changing when i step on brake.

weird stuff. hey mike, if socket base wasn't grounded i think there would be nothing on bulb at all?

just thinkin out loud. i may trying pulling tail light assembly off another bilke and checking to see if that makes any difference.

any other ideas are appreciated.

thanks

might try turning key to "park" position (all the way clockwise on cb77) and see what comes on; might give a clue...

You might look inside the socket to see if bare wires are touching each other.

got it!

Post by wormohead » Mon Jul 07, 2014 9:59 pm

just for giggles...... i reversed the 2 wires from the lamp to harness. they were attached via correct color codes to main harness. some bonehead must must have spliced the main harness and reversed these wires further toward the main.

all works as should. i guess the "never assume" rule applies.

on to the next gremlin!
