CA77 305 frame changes ?

Post by canuckada » Sat May 24, 2014 9:11 am

I have just purchased a 1961 Honda CA77 305 which is largely complete and relatively clean except....someone in their infinite wisdom thought it would be easier (so it would appear) to cut off the tail end of the frame after the fender braces rather than repair it. Could anyone elaborate as to what changes there were to the frames throughout the years this bike was made? My only viable options would be to either buy another frame or heaven forbid cut up another one and weld in the new section. Any suggestions?

Frame Changes

Post by canuckada » Sun May 25, 2014 12:22 pm

To clarify, what I am trying to determine is if there were any changes to the 305 frames/body over the course of the bikes manufacture and if so, what they might be. More specifically could I take the tail end off a 68 for example and weld it to my 61 and have it mesh? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have. Cheers!

Let's start by ascertaining your bikes year of issue by your frame number and engine number, because if it is a 1961 someone has placed a later tank and seat on it as well as later fender braces.

CA77 305 frame changes ?

The VIN is C77-e100045 according to the registration. As I am pretty new to this, does that give any clarity in terms of the year?

1964. ..........
I think that design has the back half of the finder spot welded under the seat.
If it does you can get another frame and replace your cut off end.
Takes work. .................lm

It looks like they may have registered your bike with the engine number as the VIN instead of the frame number. The frame number is stamped vertically on the left side of the frame next to where the kick stand /foot peg mount is bolted to the frame.

I am picking up the bike this weekend so I won't be able to check the VIN info until then. Thank you everyone for your input thus far - what a wonderful community of support.
I'll keep you posted. Cheers!
