Bad running 66 CL77

Post by pwdavis45 » Wed May 21, 2014 4:17 pm

Ok, don't know where to go from here. Restoring my 66 CL77 with .5 over bore, pistons, new carb kits, plugs, points, timing set, 150 compression. When I pull back on the throttle the engine hesitates and sometimes stalls. Idle is perfect. Been through the book and tried every carb adjustment, even raising the c clip which did not help. Throttle valves installed correctly with raised part in rear. I'm in Albuquerque at 5000', but don't think that is it. Any ideas? Thank you!

Stalling

Post by lifewithoutparole » Wed May 21, 2014 6:13 pm

I had this same problem on my 66 X6 Hustler a few years back....I had just installed the rebuilt engine and carbs and couldn't find a cause. As I was easing down the street in second gear it was stalling and I reached over and pulled the gas cap (Suzuki's had a stopper style gas cap without threads) it immediately took off! Seems the vent in the gas cap was plugged. for the heck of it, try running your bike without the gas cap or with it loose so you can easily twist it off while riding. Or, just check the cap and vent. I took a piece of wire and cleaned out my vent and the X6 was flying after that. Sometimes it is something unusual. Good luck.

Try the same test with the choke applied just a small amount. If it's running lean the choke trick will make it run better and at least you'll know it wants more fuel.

Which position did your clip start in? Second from the bottom is where a lot of folks start. Bottom is the richest position, top is the leanest.
What do your plugs look like now? Are they fouled or clean?

dead spot at throttle up

I went throught the exact same thing. All work like you checked and rechecked. Not getting enough fuel or too lean when twisting the throttle. Well, duhhhhh, I did not put the original air filters on and insteand used pod filters which are about as usefull as window screens! Most bikes are factory set up to experience "some" vacume at the carb intakes as a result of air filter resistance to air inflow. This gets more fuel sucked up through the jets. As soon as I wrapped the pods with extra filter material (I cut a towel in strips for a first try) there was a recognizable difference! I had been running with choke 3/4 closed to get rich enough mixture to accellerate. Now I run properly with choke open and nice power curve. Eurika! After all that carb rebuildiing and timing and tuning and foul language it boiled down to the obvious right in front of my nose. So I'm an A-hole but my CL runs way better now! The clutch just went south so here I go again, hahaha Best of luck.
