fork seal confusion

Post by versuspop » Thu May 08, 2014 9:02 pm

hi there-

66cb77

I am accustomed to the mid 70's fork designs honda had--cb450/350. where you remove a snap ring, undo a bolt at the bottom and then yank on the fork upper to remove the fork seal. I am not sure how to remove the fork seals on this bike. do i remove the chrome piece first, or do i yank on the upper section to "hammer out" the seal before i remove the chrome piece?

the service manual doesn't say anything about it--as far as i can tell...

If you have the later type fork lowers (aluminum), remove the chrome piece, then the snap ring on top of the seal.

If you have the steel sliders then you unscrew the chrome piece with the seal inside.

Ok, but what is the method for prizing out the actual seal.
Maybe it is a dumb question. I was real tired when I was looking at it.

With the later type you should be able to pop the seal out by pulling up on the fork tube.

Should the piece directly below the seal and above the o ring be able to be removed? I have tried to knock it out, obviously through the non tapered end, but it is not budging. I am assuming it comes out because if I am to remove the fork seal by pulling on the fork upper, the seal is actually lifted out by this piece. It just seems to not be willing to budge. (I have removed the snap ring).

What I am asking is if I can apply force to the piece under the fork oil seal.
