oil filter

Post by versuspop » Thu May 08, 2014 8:42 pm

Hi all!

66CB77

should there be a washer (part 20 in the diagram) between the oil filter and the engine case?

seems like yes, but i did not see one when i opened up the side cover. (of course, when i opened the chain side, a nail fell out)

No, it goes between the outboard side of the filter and the oil filter cover that gets mounted to the clutch side cover. You slip the washer onto the oil filter shaft then slide the shaft through the filter.

Sadly, I finally checked my oil filter and the washer had been installed in the incorrect position. It's been like that for several thousand miles in the last 15 tears. The guy that rebuilt it is the "guru" in Albuquerque and is still in business. He has had a vintage cycle junkyard for many years. maybe he let his flunky did the work. Not endorsing them but here is the website.

Apparently there used be some confusion about the location of this washer. It is clarified as HT says, on the outside of the filter, in Bill Silver's restoration manual.
