The parts book shows the gear.
Have you looked at the dogs on all the gears?. ...........lm

im pulling the engine this weekend and should have the tranny open by sunday to do eval and measurements.

People were commenting they replaced their 2nd gear due to worn dog ears. I started looking at the microfiche and 2nd gear is marked as 2 parts. Mainshaft and Countershaft. I was wondering for those that had replaced2nd gear if its only (1) of these or do they mean "both" components of 2nd. It was unclear to me.

NOS countershaft 2nds seem readily available but mainshaft ones not so much.

You will know better what you have when you split the cases and look at ALL GEARS.
Until then you don't have any questions as to each gear.
Look inside and get back. .....lm

installed offset cotters. found broken shift pin

Post by apophis » Tue May 27, 2014 10:48 am

multiple delays, but I finally had time to pull the engine

I installed the .040 cotters. checked the shift forks. nothing bent our out of rounds. found that a shift pin was broken along with its roller. Had gouged the shift drum as well. I still have my original shift drum and have NOS shift pin, but no roller. have to order one

test shiting questions

Post by apophis » Tue May 27, 2014 11:13 am

when testing the shifting pattern. Occasionally the dog ears for any gear will meet dog ear to dog ear with the next gear and not mate. is this only happening because I am slow turning the sprocket? I pulled each shaft out and rotated the gears manually to realign, but after 10 shifts it will randomly happen for one shift. Is this a concern? Other than my 2nd gear issue It never had problems shifting between 2-3-4-3-2-1 before.

Mine sometimes does not want to gear down without first shifting up and then back down. Not a real problem but in traffic it makes your heart rate go up a bit.

Would like to see a pic of the groves in the shift drum where the rollers move. ............lm
