amal carbs were made in england and were used on b.s.a.'s, triumphs, nortons, and other bikes from the u.k.

(not to be confused with amel carbs that were german and installed on some pre-war b.m.w.'s)

i have no idea which amal carb--if any--would work on your bike.

furthurmore, i have no idea why you would want to use one. if you figure it out, let us know how it works out for you.

...or better yet, don't say anything. just post saying something like, "so, i tickled my carb and gave 'er a kick". ha, ha! see how many people scratch there heads on that one.

Amal carbs for a SuperHawk

Post by Vince Lupo » Sun Jul 22, 2007 7:35 pm

Amal 626's are the only way to fly, baby! Check out my posting regarding 'Mikuni Carbs' and you can read the entire saga. Out of the box the Amals are great, though we did have to raise the needle after having installed the TOGA/Norman Hyde Gold Star mufflers. Why bother using them? Well, if your old Keihins are worn out and you can't find NOS ones, the Amals are great. They bolt right up like the Keihins and they look entirely appropriate. However, according to this month's Classic Bike Magazine (July 2007), they do tend to wear out after about 8000 miles use on a British twin. But, they are simple, they work, and they're available brand new....what's not to like?

Hello Vince.
AMAL carbs?
Whats not to like!!!!!!!!!!!
Wear out at 8,000 miles.
COST HOW MUCH????????????
Ya got yourself a good bike but as ya told me once those carbs cost a lot of $$$$$$.
I offer anyone that has the real CB/CL72/77 CARBS which need work that I'll help them save a bunch of $$$$$ and have a HONDA with the correct carbs that work. I have many happy bike riders that haven't spent the $$$$$$$ you did to get a non correct carb and have a engine that runs and tunes just like we did when the bike was original.
Sorry Vince but I will never admit a Amal carb was/is better than what the HONDA company installed. I respect ya well but in this case I disagree. .................emo

Amal carbs for a SuperHawk

Post by Vince Lupo » Mon Jul 23, 2007 7:33 pm

Oh well, what can I say? Maybe down the line I might ultimately change my mind and go back to the Keihin's (and I may send them down to you Ed for you to sort out), but presently I've decided to try the Amal's out and they seem to be working out very well, particularly since this specific 'art project' of mine is to do a Brit/Jap thing (I do have other vintage bikes that are bone-stock, believe it or not!). And yeah, it is a bit of an eye opener to find out that they will need servicing after about 8,000 miles. But hey, the bike took 41 years to get 10,000 miles on it, so they might last another 20 years!

I like your reply and no doubt your carbs will be good in time but I personally don't think they actually cure an engine problem that hasn't been cured with the STOCK STANDARD HONDA CARBS for the CB/Cl77 bikes.
I once owned a BSA 650 and that AMAL carb was a dripping gas item that once the engine was at revs the gas went inside to explode rather than just make the engine look stained.
Pleas let us know how things go with the ride to and the show at MO. ..................lm
