Splitting the Case

Post by FishingForTheCure » Thu Feb 06, 2014 12:30 pm

Keeping it as brief as possible:
Restoring a '63 CB77. Head/Cylinders off @ the shop for .75 Over pistons & a precautionary valve grinding. Oil cover & KS covers are off but items such as clutch & Dyn. are still secured. Ready to pull the oil pump for cleaning & new gaskets (all precautionary). Only gasket I haven't prepared myself to change is the gearcase halves. Don't want to but I'd be willing to bet that if I didn't it would leak & I'd be right back here again. This far in ... do it, right?

Read thru the various steps, photos, etc... Most illustrate removal of Dyn & clutch BUT, do I NEED to remove those parts to change the gearcase gasket (between upper/lower gearcase)?

I'm not a motor guy ... only do what I must out of necessity rather than pure pleasure. Looks like the contents of this case will stay put in the upper half of the case when flipped over & the batch of bolts from the underside are removed; correct?

Thanks in advance!

There isn't a gasket between the top and bottom case.
HONDA used a thin sealer similar to HONDABOND 4 or YAMABOND 4.
What do you plan when you split the cases?. ........lm

Well, well.... I could have sworn there was a gasket in my kit. Aren't I the "duh" of the day. That saves me a list of work!!!! Horay! .......assuming it isn't leaking/seeping thru that old bond.
