Regulator/Rectifier

Post by moondoggers » Wed Jan 29, 2014 12:59 pm

I installed a Kohler Reg/Rect yesterday on my 66' scrambler and found with a test light the unit is hot with the key in off position.
The kohler has 3 tabs and the middle tab has + on it so I connected the red/hot wire there.
Is that correct to be hot all the time?

Not having the schematic in front of me to read, I'd assume that you're correct.

Sounds like you may have tapped directly from the positive side of the battery for a power source and before the ignition switch which would make it hot all the time. Try to find a power source that is after the ignition switch, that way when the key is on you have power and when the key is turned off, the power at the rectifier is off as well.

I don't know what the wire gauge requirements are for the rectifier, but if you look at a wiring diagram, I bet you'll find a suitable power source.

Hopefully somebody with a little more knowledge will chime in.

Good luck.

Yep - it is tied directly to the battery for charging with the engine running - It draws no current from the battery.

End terminals from the alternator - center to the battery.

Thanks, I always disconnect the battery while working with the wiring system and I was surprised to find the regulator/ rectifier hot after reconnecting the battery.
