New 1961 CB72 ProjectNew 1961 CB72 ProjectHi - I wanted to just introduce myself and my recent purchase (October). registered as a 1962, but the wiring loom says 1961 CB72. Frame # 113429. It did run when I picked it up, and is now completely disassembled and restoration is in progress - a lot of rust to remove! I'm also posting to "Parts Wanted" for a few parts that are to far gone.
Cheers. JMN
hi , good luck with your project, i have a 61 model , and there is a few others on here with them. i take it the number you have put up is the engine number, as the 61 frame is only 5 numbers, would like to see a pic of the other side.
there is quite a few difference's between the 61 and later bikes. alan
hi jon, i would say that engine is been in from new as its very close to each other, some engines have a breather tower on the back of the engine.
61 parts are hard to find but they do come up now and then. frame is shorter on your model to the later bikes, so the seat pan is different, bolted brackets rather than spot welded, rear shocks should have alloy covers top and bottom, will list some of the differences, but nearly all parts have a difference. frame (shorter) seat (bolted brackets ) tank mudguards, (front alloy, rear has a wiring channel up the middle) i had some of the channels made. shocks. (alloy top and bottomed ) rear swing arm ( has an extra hole by the lower part of the rear shock ) forks ( different size) front brake plate ( single shoe ) horn (black) handle bar grips ( different pattern) some cables ( black) spark plugs ( smaller) brake pedal (shorter) lots of engine parts. there is lots more parts. so you might have to repair what you have , so don't through anything away.. alan
Hi Alan - I am just doing what needs to be done. It had too much rust and grease to clean up without disassembly. But I'm keeping anything that is salvageable, which is most of it. Needed a new starter clutch, for one thing (it was missing!).
Thanks for the info on what makes it a '61. Two aberrations: silver, not black horn, and a double lead front brake. Other than that, all matches up. Hopefully it will be done by spring. Cheers, Jon
hi jon, horn can just painted, single front brakes can be hard to find, i have just sent pr of wheels from my friends house in Michigan, to me in the uk. would like to see some more pics of base of seat , rear mudguard, speedo.
i purchased a 62 bike in new york area, but it had all 61 parts on it, that only had about 4k miles on it, still had the tyres on it from new. i have just done the repairs on that and gave it a good clean etc.. cheers. alan
