carbs

Post by abert51 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 9:19 am

HI Guys, I've been wondering about replacing my Kehin carbs with Mikunis. Any suggestions as to which Mikunni models in the 26 mm size would fit my 1965 CL77? I have been having a devil of a time getting the left side to fire and timing, plugs, spark, compression fuel lines, float levels, and cleanliness are all good. Frustration often gives rise to strange thoughts but the bike is all cafe'd out looking good and it would be nice to ride it in spring. A big thank you.

yep I've done everything except ultrasonic cleaning on the left carb. as to air, idle jet is clear, main jet likewise, carb clean any and all passages, but left side still fouls the plug. throttle slides look even and jet needles and needle jets are new too. I borrowed a friends lef carb, put it on and voila, the damn thing ran great so I bought two nice Kehins on flea bay, swapped out the left carb and same problem. grrrr. My friend sold his bike so I had to give his carb back and I was too honest to keep it and substitute one of mine. (damn conscience!). So I'm thinking two nice Mikunis and start from scratch. Thanks all for you symathy and suggestions. Keep em comin.

I tried a pair of VM26's on my CB77 and we couldn't get them to work. It seems that those particular Mikunis wouldn't work because they were not meant to be bolted directly to the head (not saying that all Mikunis won't work this way, but these particular ones didn't). There wasn't enough space for the gas to 'atomise', but they couldn't be pulled back from the head due to the petcock being in the way as well as the design of the stock tank. Not sure how the petcock/tank arrangement is with your CL, but you may want to do a bit more research before you plunge a lot of money into something that might not work (oh yeah, we had custom flanges made too for them to mount, as they just didn't bolt right on). Ultimately we went with Amal 626's, and I've been a happy camper since. But I agree with Peter, I'd not necessarily throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet.....

I don't get the "mass hole" part of the post as it doesn't sound carb related.
