Starter Chain - How Many Links ?Starter Chain - How Many Links ?Hi
This is re my CB72. Pulled the alternator to helicoil one of the mounting holes and thought the starter chain was rubbing against the cases, so took it off to measure and possibly replace. The parts book says DK219 58 links, as does Bil Silver's book except in one place where it says 59 links .. this one is 60 links. Go to stock of spares and new starter chain ( 28101-253-000 ) has 60 links. Did Honda change the sprockets and hence the chain length at any point in production ? How many links is correct ? cheers Phil Just took mine off and counted 60 links and is very loose, the parts sate it should be 58 links so I need to take one link out but need a soft link to reconnect David Silver here in the UK has soft links for the cam chain.
So is the cam chain the same as the starter chain they look the same can anyone tell me if this is so. Thanks. Unless your starter chain is totally worn out, if you remove a link, you won't be able to get it back on. If it is that bad, it's time to get a new one. Try using feeler gauges to space the starter out (same thickness on each side), until the slack in the chain seems acceptable. It may only take about .020" to get it right. Once you have an establised shim thickness, get some industrial plastic shim stock (available in various dimensions), and make a couple of shims to go between the starter and engine cases. You can cut it with scissors or metal shears and punch the 6mm holes with a paper punch. It will last about forever. Regards, Chase
