almost there

Post by abert51 » Tue Dec 10, 2013 4:53 pm

for quite a while now I have been 99% to the end of my 65 CL77 remake, that is top end and spiffing up. My left cylendar has been fighting me like a dog. Compression checks out even on both sides and timing is set, checked and rechecked both static and with timing light. It starts first kick every time but that darned left jug gets fouled real quick and it runs on one cylendar (right). I have bought and cleaned carbs (checked float level, good gaskets, clean jets etc) from ebay to change out the left one with the same result. Still left side misfires and sometimes even some blackish ooze coming down from the left exhaus pipe as it fits into the head. Fouling, fouling and I am looking for all possibilities. Can't wait to ride it cause it is looking good! anyone want to weigh in?

Just a guess - could the intake valve guide be cracked or badly worn,
hence letting oil get sucked in on the intake stroke? I do not know whether
my supposition is out-of-this-world, so obvious you checked it first,
or a physical impossibility.

Good luck ... which means I hope you get better advice than I can provide.

If it's not oil? And your not getting blue smoke? Lean it out. Go to smaller jets, lower the needles or both. But do one thing at a time.
Are you run mufflers? What size jets are you running & what size needles? What plug are you running? OEM needles and jets or aftermarket?

Check your plug wires, coil, caps? I'm having that problem with my Guzzi.
