CYB racer find

Post by carpenter793 » Sun Dec 01, 2013 9:54 pm

Picked up a new Superhawk that I am pretty excited about. The pictures on the ad were poor, and the bike had an atrocious set of ape hangers on it, but it was worth the drive. The bike has the following CYB parts: seat, aluminum rear fender, rear number plate bracket, clip-ons, top triple, steering dampener, one of the velocity stacks (not both), and shifter setups (both linkage and direct). Obviously was someone's race bike at some point, and then desecrated with ape hangers and a gold flake vinyl seat cover at some point in the '70's. These parts will provide good patterns for fabbing up copies for my '67 Superhawk, and I will be interested in tearing that motor apart (it unfortunately has the stock four speed). I am needing some help with dating this machine, though, so hopefully someone can help. The wiring harness says 1962, but the frame number is 311299, which is around 1963 best I can tell. I would normally assume that the harness would have the most accurate date, but I'm not sure on this one. Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard! You have some nice CYB goodies there. Frame number indicates a 1963. What is your engine number?

Thanks! I was actually a member a few years ago, but long since forgot my username and password. I am just now starting to get the urge to start working on my Superhawks again, which is a good thing. Anyway, the engine number is 311302, so only 3 off from the frame, so definitely the original motor. Seems strange to find a '62 wiring harness on a '63 - the other way around would seem much more feasible. Thanks for your input on agreeing that it looks like a '63. I'm noticing a few differences between this bike and my '65 and '67's...

Wiring harnesses pretty much always pre-date (or match) the bike. It would be strange, unless it was replaced, to have a wiring harness newer than the bike.

My 1962 Dream has a wiring harness dated 1961. British bike manufacturers started producing bikes in the year before the new model was released.

Hoosier Tom - Thanks, I appreciate that. I remember this site being a wealth of knowledge, so I am looking forward to getting back into it. G-man, I was thinking more along the lines of a replacement harness, but it makes sense that they would roll prior year harnesses over to the next year. I didn't even think of that. Thanks for the replies - it sounds like the verdict is a '63. It will probably be awhile before I get to the restore of this bike, but like I said, I plan to use the CYB parts for patterns to get my '67 finished. It was finished, but I sold the bodywork, seat, and carbs off of it to buy my TIG welder. I think my home machine shop is finally finished, so now I can get back to making parts and working on the bikes. Thanks again.

They used the same wiring harness for many years. At Honda of Salt Lake it was common to see them on late models.
