idiot light?

Post by bikedoctor99 » Tue Oct 08, 2013 9:56 pm

I recently experienced an alternator failure that left me stranded 10 miles from home, luck was with me when a nearby home owner stored my cb77 and drove me home, almost unheard of in N.J.!
Took the shorai battery for an over night charge and have been riding total loss til I get a replacement alternator.

Has anyone wired an idiot light to indicate a charging failure or know of a minature ammeter to prevent this from happening again?
Fifty year old bike and parts is not too shabby, 6000 miles since rebuild, but there are too many far away places that I've ridden to repeat this again.
Any one else have this happen?

Check out a product called Battery Bug. I've been using them on my Goldwings for several years. Will tell you state of your battery ( and thus your charging) and when to replace in advance of failure.

Thanks Mike, sounds like something that could eliminate a potentially poor ending to a great bike ride. Looks like a sensible alternative to carrying a spare battery.

Here are a bunch of links to cheap digital voltmeters - I have used similar on a Goldwing. I like these better than an idiot light - they tell you the exact voltage.
