starter rebuild

This is a follow up to this previous post:

It "healed itself" while messing with it last time, mostly worked until just the other day, then refused to turn over at all despite a lot of banging on it with rubber hammer.

I found a local shop that rebuilds starters and alternators in house:

Once I assured them I'd take care of finding any needed parts (easier for me than them, no parts needed as it turned out), they were willing to check it out. They found that the insulation on the field coils had deteriorated/broken down, pretty much turned to dust. So field coils were shorting to case as I sortta suspected.

They re-wrapped/rebuild coils and got it working perfectly for a price that impelled me to contribute $20 to the shop guys Friday-after-work beer fund, which they greatly appreciated. Counter guy took me back and introduced me to the wizard who did the work, ran it on bench. Both seemed just as pleased as I was that they were able to help me out. Just a super shop, super experience.

The armature, commutator, and brushes were all still in good shape thanks to previous rebuild, which helped.

Did I mention fast service? I took starter in on Wednesday am, got it back Friday pm. Cleaned it up and repainted it with good ol' Krylon #1403 and installed Saturday morning, have used it enough since then I'm quite confident my starter woes are now behind me

I'd recommend these guys (Texas Alternator Starter Service) without reservation. Can't imagine they wouldn't be able to work through shipping. If you can't get through to them through website pm me and I'll give you contact info for Ian the counter guy, who was most helpful. So Happy...

Isn't amazing when you find people who are helpful and know what they are doing? It should be the norm but, sadly, these days it isn't.

G, I was actually working, not cruising. LMAO!

Never seen Oz; always the Northern Hemisphere, I'm sad to say....

I put the 250 on eBay, back in the summer. I need the space for the CB77. It made £1600 but not enough for me to part with it, so it's still in my UK garage. I'm not prepared to mug it away; it'd make a nice project for someone with the time and enthusiasm for a rolling restoration!
