The slide should have the cutout to the rear.
Did you look into the throat and see if it is at bottom?. ......lm

check to make sure the throttle cable is not hanging up on the frame tab under the front of the gas tank

Took everything apart again and put the slide back in so it seems to idle now but I'm still running rich (both plugs black and sooty). To answer loud mouse's question the slide is down as far as it will go but I'm not sure if it is all the way down. Can you describe what it should look like when looking into the throat? Should I move the needle? Run hotter plugs? adjust the throttle cable? Open to suggestions???

With the bike not running, put your left ear as close to the carb as you can get. twist the throttle on and off. you should hear a definite "click" as the slide bottoms out. if you don't hear a click, adjust the cable until you do. if you can't adjust the cable to make that happen, then something is wanky with the cable or the twist grip. lubrication? wrong cable? sticky slide at the handlebar?

I took carb off again and it does click at the bottom so I think the cable is ok. I lowered the pin one position so it is in slot 2 from the top. I was able to get it to idle so I took the bike for about a 20 minute ride with both sides firing and it seemed to have full power. By the end of the ride it was sputtering a bit so I pulled the plugs and they were black (too rich). I ordered NDK D6HA so when they arrive I will put them in. The only other idea I have is to increase the float to 28 mm and see if the improves the running rich problem. Suggestions?

M; did you by chance rebuild the carb with a Keyster kit? If so , I hope you saved the original slide needle. that could be the problem.
