Fourth gear performance

Post by deaddog » Mon Jun 18, 2007 7:19 am

1961 CB77 Super Hawk

I got her running and took her for an open road test. For the first 30 miles she ran strong and I got her to run 90MPH. After that she seamed to lose power in fourth gear and I had trouble getting it to hit 6,000 RPM in forth. I could down shift and she would pull strong and rev. 9,000 in all gears except fourth. If I drafted behind a truck I could get her up on rev. in fourth. Since the last time I rode a 305 and it was a Dream and it was 30years ago and I weighted 50lbs. less (my weight is 200lbs now) I am not sure how this bike is suppose to perform. The wind did pick up and cause some drag but 60MPH is about all she would do in fourth and I could do that in third. What should I expect in performance?

It seamed to be starving for fuel in fourth, so when I got home I checked the petcock screen and it looked good. Plugs looked good. Did not check the float levels yet, but I set them before this trip.

One last thought, in first gear the kick starter lever will move forward sometimes. I know this is a sign that the roller bearings are starting to go in the lower gear. I was hoping that it might cure itself after a couple of oil changes; after all it has been sitting for twenty plus years. Is it possible that it is dragging the bike down in fourth?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I looked for a thread that dealt with this, but could not find one. Thanks in advanced.

If the shaft is warn all the gears are eating each other.
You can turn the engine over and check/replace that shaft with out removing any of the top end. ..............lm

I guess I fooling myself about a couple oil changes will correct the kick start shaft problem. Man, I want to ride this bike.

Loud Mouse do you think it is causing my fourth gear power problem? Or do you think I got something else going on there?

I'm not sure it is causing the problem but it sure won't help.
The longer ya ride that bike the more gears and other parts you will need to replace.
Tis not a good thing to have those gears/shafts out of line. What size rear and front sprocket ya got?. ...............lm

Front sprocket 15 / rear sprocket 30/ is this stock?

I pulled the engine today and will split it this weekend. Is there any bolts or nuts that are not obvious that I should be looking for? Will the cases split with little force or will it require tapping or prying? I will be working with the engine upside down on a bench. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ya need to remove all the parts which are attached to both cases. You will find 2 14mm nuts on top just behind the cylinders. After you've removed all the parts and nuts and bolts from the cases loosen those 2 nuts and remove the plate then put the nuts back on and top out the nuts to the shafts. Place the engine on it's side and place a piece of wood on those nuts and smack that wood with a heavy hammer until the cases split then put engine on its top after you have removed the 2 nuts and pull the bottom off. If ya have any problems get in touch and I'll give ya my phone number. ..........lm
