Hey everyone!

I am new to this and I am thinking of purchasing a 1965? CB77 Superhawk off my bud. It was his dads and has been collecting rust in his garage for some time now and he wishes to get rid of it.

My hope was to buy it off of him and fix it up, but the more I look into it, the more I realize I have NO IDEA what I am doing! hahah I would really like to be able to fix this bike and then have the skills under my belt to be able to take care of it for years to come, but I don't even know where to start! Luckily since it is my friends, I have been going over to his place and we have been tinkering with it together, but he knows as much as I do about motorcycles.

My question for all of you: Should I purchase this bike and do you think that I will be able to fix it up? It is pretty good condition from what I can see, a few parts missing and lots of rust, but does need work.

What I know needs to be replaced thus far:
-At least 1 exhaust (it is missing one)
-Battery
-Air filters
-Spark plugs
-Tires
-Almost all new hoses and such
-Paint job/re-chrome and other esthetics

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

First depends on the cost. Consumables are easy to get but some stuff is hard to get and expensive - like exhaust system. Rusty parts are expensive to rechrome and sometimes impossible to find in good shape. Check ebay for parts you think you might need to see availability and cost.

Cadman is absolutely right. I'd add - How many miles are on it? Does the engine turn over? Does it shift? Is the inside of the gas tank clean, or is it rusted? Are the insides of the carburetors clean? If it's in decent shape mechanically, you might be able to get away with cosmetics only. That will save some cost.

Finally, if I can do it, YOU can!

Ok, so I decided to buy the cycle, and I am super stoked! Thank you all for the support and advice! My growing problem Sarals, is that I dont even know what all of that is, or how to check for any of that. Haha

I am taking it one piece at a time and i realized that there was a chain that was not attached inside the engine so i decided to do some digging. I apologize if I dont know the terminology of things, so please forgive my ignorance.

In the pictures below, there is one thing that worries me. When I opened the side panel since the small chain was not attached and looked at the inside of the panel, I saw these wear marks on the panel. I have no idea how long they have been there, but they look recent. Do you guys think that this is something that i should be worried about?

Was it the left side cover, the side with the shifter? Your photo looks like the inside of that cover. I can see wear marks, but from here they don't look too bad. Assuming it is the left side cover, that would be the clutch cover, and the small chain spins the centrifugal oil filter - "oil slinger". That's a drum on a shaft under the front of the left side cover. Is that drum still there? You can see it to the left of a larger drum, which is the clutch, in this photo.

The oil slinger, as you call it, wasn't attached at all and I went diving in to fix it. Haha

The large drum though, the clutch, has some wear on the edges where it seems to have made those marks on the cover.

I will try and post some pictures of it when i get a chance.

I can't see any wear in the photo, but if something rubbed against that case cover you do need to decide what and why. It's looking very dirty inside that motor. You might want to clean it up best you can. How does the tensioner roller for the primary chain (under the oil sling) look? Is it chewed up, or is it smooth with a nice ridge in the center?
