Ok, I was just in the garage and did some testing. When I have the carboard in between the points, I have 12 V at the points. When the points are together I stuck the positive of the meter inside the spark plug holder and the ground to the engine and it also shows 12V. However, when I put the spark plug in there again (another new one) and turn it over, I get the left side to spark at the plug but once again, it arcs between the points on the right side.

I can't download a picture right now but it is definitely the right coil. I looked up coils on EBAY and it is actually called H500 Coils.

Ideas on why it is still arcing between the points?

Ed, I got your email and will set the points as you said in your tuning recipe. I have not swapped out coils yet---I don't have another coil to try. I do have another set of points with the back plate and a condenser, should I try that first and then if it doesn't work, go from there with the coil? The set I have was from another bike I took apart so it has been used.

I believe Ed means for you to swap the coils by reversing them to see if your problem migrates to the opposite side.

How would I do that on this coil setup though?

Hi,

Yes, a bad condenser could be the culprit, but there's another reason for arcing across the points. It's not so common as a bad condenser, but sometimes the arcing isn't solved with swapping the condenser.

A condenser is connected parallel over the points (via ground). If the energy of this system (points / condenser) can't find "a way out", it will arc over the points, for example when a coil isn't connected properly.

Check if your coil of the right side is connected properly, or check if the coil is working. Check if the wiring to the coil is connected properly and check the connectors for oxidation.

It's advisable to swap coils for a while, or to use a spare coil to confirm that the mounted coil or wiring is working properly.
