No spark on right side---

Post by jsmith1107 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 11:49 am

On my CL77--I have looked thru search and have seen many reasons why this could be true. I have talked to Ed and the points seem to be arcing instead of feeding down to the plug. Ed, if you read this, get ready I maybe calling you again soon!! haha. Just wondering if anyone else wanted to chime in. The left side is really good but the right just won't go thru. I bought new points, which were pretty dang cheap, but that wasn't the issue. I have the coils that aren't separate, they are one solid unit so not sure if it is the coils or not. I read where Davo said the points could be grounding so will check that out too. Any other ideas everyone?

I would suggest the following:
Check that you have 12V across the points when open with the ignition on.
Make sure the points are absolutely clean
Try cutting 1/4" off of your plug wire and reinstalling the resistor cap or even swap the resistor cap that you know is good from the other side.
Make sure the plug is grounded well when checking for spark (if you're using the plug to check)
Points arcing could be due to a bad condenser, so you may want to change that too.

make sure the plugs are new. im sure you have but this can be an issue ive seen one be bad and the other good. A plug can spark and still be bad if its arcing all over.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the response. I have cut off the plug wires twice now and actually have tried new plug caps as well so dont' think that is it. When I was talking to Ed he said that when I manually open the points it should spark at the plug but it doesn't. It does however spark across the points on the right side for some reason. When I check for 12V am I manually opening the points? I can't remember what Ed told me unfortunately and it has been a couple of weeks since we talked about this. I also have tried new plugs but that didn't solve it. I have not tried a new condenser yet. I thought I read on this forum somewhere someone saying it couldn't be a condenser if one side is sparking. I also read that coils shouldn't be the issue and even if it was, I would have to buy the whole unit since it is one solid piece. I had a 66 before and it had separate coils with screw on caps where the plug wires went. Why is this one different? Were they different at the factory or which is the original?

With the points open, short the wire terminal to ground with a screwdriver and see if that produces a spark.

Before you spend too much time I would try a temporary coil. Almost any coil will work. As I have said before mine ran with an old automotive coil with the plug leads taped together.

Scramblers as far as I know, always had two coils, one for each cylinder. Your coil sounds like an aftermarket replacement. A single coil with two high tension leads sparks both leads at the same time (like the 360-degree crankshaft Dreams). I'm not sure how you would make that work with a 180-degree crank with 2 sets of points??? Did this motor ever run with this ignition setup? We're a little off the reservation here, need some pictures and a better description of that coil.

You should measure 12V across the points whenever they are not making contact. Stick a piece of cardboard in there and measure the voltage between the terminal and ground.
