CL72 steering head gap on front forks

Post by mips » Thu Jun 06, 2013 7:12 pm

I'm putting back together a '65 CL72.

I put new races in it, made sure the bottom washer and seal were on.

But, there is a healthy gap between the handlebar bridge and the nut below (dust seal that holds the balls in). I did notice that when I get the triple tree snug, but movable, that I can see some threads above the dust seal. I'm not sure if maybe I beat the lower bearing cup down too low?

I was starting to think maybe I have my fork tubes too high? Any ideas?

If you have a parts book you may want to be certain all the parts are installed. .....lm

I checked again and everything is there. Only doubtful thing i can think of is is whether I have correct washer under the cap nut. The washer i have is about .002"

The gap I have is roughly .08"

No sir, I bought Honda oem stuff from classic Honda restoration. I didn't replace the ball bearings themselves because I had 37 good ones.

One thing I though was peculiar was that once I cinched the superior dust shield down, I could see a few threads above the dust shield visible.
