1966 Honda 305 Firing Problems HELP !!!!!!!!
ChokeI had this problem for a while. The plugs were getting crazy black too. I figured out that I was running the choke on the carburator with the handle up (close to the seat). Once the engine has started and warmed up, it should be in the down position (away from the seat). Maybe that is the problem?

Power at pointsLots of opinions here and they are all good things to check.
If you lose power to the points you lose spark as well. Confirm that the points are not closed when you are "losing power". Turning the crank a little should confirm that you have in deed lost power. If so, somewhere in the mix the power has to come back on at the coil again for it to start. Have you confirmed when that happens? Does your horn work when you lose power to the coil? If not that will be an easy way to confirm when your power returns. When the horn starts working the coil should have power. If all of this is what is actually happening, then it sounds like you need to focus on your key switch, in a connection in the black wire in the harness or in the black wire itself. When the power goes out in the black wire do you still have power in the red wire coming from the fuse to the key switch? I hope you get it solved soon.
There is not "power" to the points - they just complete a ground to fire the coil. If you just run a hot jumper (+12VDC) to the positive side of the coil you bypass all other electrical "stuff". If it does not run this way it is either coil or points or fuel.
I still think it is fuel - You start with a full float bowl - there is an obstruction somewhere in fuel delivery - it runs until the float bowl is empty. It stops, you wait, during this time fuel is trickling into the carb again. The float bowl is full again and the problem repeats. It could be the float set way too low - something restricting the flow at the carb or tank. You should have a drain screw in the bottom of the float bowl, Remove it and check the flow.
