Generic Universal Speedometer for 305 Dream?

Has anyone replaced a Honda 305 Dream CA77 speedometer with a generic universal speedometer that has a 12mm connection? I searched the forum and could not find any answers on this topic.

I know I would need a custom cable. Does anyone make custom cables with the dream drive gear fitting?
Do I need a different drive gear with a standard fitting? Does anyone know of a different wheel drive gear that will fit the dream?

I don't have a cable and I don't think the speedometer is repairable (I have disassemble it) the and I can't wast funds on a ebay purchase that may not be usable.

I am putting a 1964 dream, that was found sitting in a barn for the past 25 years, back on the road. It's too far gone and has too many missing parts to restore back to original, on my budget, but I hate seeing mechanical sound bikes parted out. There is more to this story but I will post that and pictures later.

Getting a working speedometer and cable is the last major issue, to being able to ride this bike the 65 miles to NH Bike week in June.

This project sounds like a lot of work in terms of coming up with an alternative. You will have the issue of mounting it in the shell when you are done, but I guess anything is possible.

What brand is your Speedo? What parts do you need to repair it? I was mystified by speedometers for a long time. They are really quite a simple mechanism, albeit with some delicate parts. If you have the right parts you can probably fix it yourself. You are right, you do want to be careful buying used speedo's on ebay.

If you are patient you can find a used cable on ebay that will probably work and not look too bad with a little effort.

Did you say you already diassenbled it or you are going to?
I've brought some pretty nasty speedos back to life. Unless they it's a solid block of rust you can soak it in penetraiting oil and free it up. Make sure you don't get the penetraiting oil on the face.

Harbor Freight has Evapo Rust that will take rust off in pretty short order and doesn't hurt plastic, etc. It has worked great on small speedo parts. But, be careful to rinse it off thoroughly. It dries really hard. I ruined an odometer mechanism finding out the hard way. It will brighten up zinc, too.

Can anyone tell me the length of the speedometer cable or cable sheath for a Honda 305 dream, CA77?

Thanks for the advise on restoring the speedometer. The gears are rusted up pretty good but I may be able to free them up by soaking then and using some dental tools to clean them, but replacing the return spring, which has lost its spring, may be a problem.

I am going to see if I can have a cable made with a 12mm speedometer nut and 16mm drive gear nut.

A mini speedometer will fits in the same location as the old one. I will blank off the opening to accommodate the new speedometer. All I need is the cable.

My cable is 34 3/4" with the sheath right at 34". You do need the right drive end for the speedo that you use and I am not sure how to calculate whether that will make yours longer of shorter.

Would love to see pictures when it is finished.

Much simpler way to have a speedometer. Get a digital bicycle speedometer. Cheap and very east to install.
