What would be great is if I could get a non-US market reflector that takes replacement bulbs.

I may have figured out a solution. I found replacement sealed beam units for the earlier CL72/77 that use spring clips to mount. The rim for that light is available and only $17.00 at one of the dealers I found on line. $12.00 for the new lamp and $17.00 for the new rim gets me back in business for about what a CB400F lamp would cost me.

Donzie, thanks for that offer. Here are some pics of the sealed beam unit including the Stanley label/number. Part number for this lamp is 33120-283-000. And there should be a rubber boot over the terminations on the back but is was crispy and sitting on my bench now.

Normally I would be content with just the one beam since I don't ride these bikes at night. But it needs to pass inspection first.

Thanks guys.

Rob

I will be in Albany on 14th April. Cannot remember how close that is to you. If you want me to have a look for something with a replaceable bulb and bring it over I would be happy to do that.

G-man, you are the man! Yes, I think I would like that. I assume that they take a bulb that is still available? The reason I ask is even the Honda fiche that show the bulb, never list the bulb in the parts list. They list the sealed beam unit. I wonder if I tried to find a UK or European Honda dealer if their fiche would list the bulb.

Albany is within spitting distance for me. I live about 15 minutes from the center of the city. And since I'm retired, I'm at your disposal. And, if you have the time, the wife and I would love to take you out for dinner or if you prefer, feed you at our house. Wife is a superb Italian cook. Sorry, no bangers and beans here.

I will PM you with my email and cell phone info and we can take it from there.

Here are my thoughts regarding this.

Will the reflector/bulb assembly have ears on it like my late model sealed beam unit to match up to my rim? I suspect the answer is no because the parts diagram that I have shows that assembly, but lists the early sealed beam and the early rim that uses spring clips to hold the reflector in place. So, I'm guessing the reflector assembly you would find in the UK would use that spring clip rim arrangement as well. Not a functional issue but and originality issue.

My fall back is what I mentioned in my last post. A sealed beam for the earlier models along with the mating rim and clips is available.

I know one thing. I'm riding the giro with the headlight off from now one. I'm sure the rough dirt sections helped kill that one old filament.

regards,
Rob

Thinking about this a little more. The CL was never imported into UK and probably not Europe either so finding an EU fiche with 'correct' parts isn't going to happen.

A CB72/77 reflector should fit and I know that one of my friends has just done that. Trouble is a lot of the old stock for these bikes is now from US so we end up with NOS sealed beams from across the pond!

The -283- part is CB450 so I'll look out for those.

I'll get back to you after a little research.

Rob

Just found this "repro" reflector / bulb unit at David Silver.

Not particularly cheap but does provide some options over the sealed beam unit.

I think I might get hold of one just to see whatnot is really like.

G-man,

When I clicked on that link, I got a relay. I looked at the site, searched using the part number and search using CB450 and did not find that repop reflector. There is no general search feature that I see where you can just type in something like "headlight".

I wonder if it senses a US IP address and I don't see the same site you see?

I'll try again.

Thanks,
Rob

I think you referring to a CB400F replacement reflectore. I found that by digging under that model. Here's the link.

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB40 ... rt_195092/

I see it is the clip in style and not the style with tabs and screws. Also noticed it is for UK with left hand driving lanes.

There is a similar replacement here in the US with the ears and a univeral bracket where the adjuster screw goes. Cost is $59.00 plus shipping.

Found this while searching for that US site link. Looks interesting. Thought you might be interested for your bikes.

Here is another site that has the one with the ears. Same price as Silver's.

As a sidenote, the pressure is off. I faked my way thru an inspection today. Guy know me. I'm lucky.

Rob
