Ideas for cleaning up hubs - without unlacing the rim

I know there was just a post on hub cleaning, but I am interested in whether there is anything I can spray on or immerse a laced wheel into that will remove 50 years of grime and gunk from the hub interior.

I can't get at it with the usual implements, because the spokes are in the way.

In an ideal world, I would dunk it in some evil chemicals, and then come back later and wipe it down clean.

I don't need perfect, just want to clean up my front and back hubs so they are not shabby.

By 'interior' I imagine that you are asking about the finned exterior of the hub between the two rows of spokes?

There are some foaming sprays for cleaning muck of alloy wheels which should be available in your local auto parts shop.

These are from a Brit site but you should get the same sort of stuff in the US.

I used some Autozone spray alloy wheel cleaner, which helped a bit with the big stuff, but I ultimately needed to use a detailing wire brush and steel wool, and a whole lot of time.

I then polished them up with Mothers and called it quits.

I got them decently clean, but not perfect by any means.

Be sure and have fresh air with that spray cleaner, and use gloves and a mask.
