The guy I bought it from said it was a 61.

Im not positive on the year, but i think it is a 61.

Your bike is most likely a 1966 Model Year, possibly a very late 1965. It is definitely not a 1961.

The good news is that the Frame and Motor were paired at the factory.

Thank you for adding the bike to the Honda Dream Registry !

I just had a 2 hour struggle at the DMV.. The sheriff insisted that the bike frame and motor had to match.. he tried several phone calls but the records for Engine # to Frame #s only went back to 1970. Michael, are you able to tell what Motor # was in a frame when it left the factory? You have a source that the DMV doesnt have it you do? Really curious..??

Unfortunately, it seems your local DMV is not properly informed. Matching frame and motor numbers are the exception, not the rule, for all of the 1960s Honda motorcycles.

No one is able to determine with a 100% certainty that a given frame/motor combination was actually paired at the factory. However, the Honda305 Registry (assembled over many years) confirms beyond any reasonable doubt that 99% of the CA/CB/CL motorcycles have frame/motor combinations divergent by up to several hundred digits (and on occasion by more than that).

Please enter your bike into the Honda305 Registry and I can take a closer look at your particular bike.

I think it is registered.. Motor #CA77E1028100. Frame is within 36 digits of matching.

There should be a date on the wiring harness under the tank area. You can tell whether it's an early or later one by a few design changes. The early ones are one piece tanks with the cap in the middle. Later ones are two piece tanks with the cap offset.

good heads up!

The cap is in the center of the tank.

Here are a few pictures of it before I stripped it all down.

Your bike appears to be a bit of a bitsa. You have an early tank but the frame appears to be 64 or later.
