Honda stamped the Frame CA78 102XXX and the Title VIN states 102XXX (same) but in the MODEL block - It was typed CA77. Anybody else have similar Title entries?

I bet the DMV will question it.

CA77 vs CA78

Post by conbs » Tue Mar 19, 2013 9:53 am

It is very common practice to refer to 305 Dreams as "CA77", though most (mid '63 through '67) are, like yours, CA78's. Your engine number will be CA77E as well.

You are correct that your DMV will want your title to match your frame number. They have a process for making corrections on titles. Just call them and let them know what the issue is and they will tell you what forms you need, etc. I wouldn't say it is normal business to change the numbers on a title, but mistakes get made, so they have to have a way to fix it.

I assume the numbers following the CA77/78 are the same on your title and frame. If not, that could be a different issue. But, if they do match, you should not have any problems. If you do run into a snag, let the forum members know. There is plenty of Honda literature that can be provided to back you up.

I hope that helps.

conbs,, I appreciate the reply.. Thankfully the numbers stamped on the frame do match the title. The DMV may not even notice the CA78 prefix on the frame ~ if so,, I dont think it will be a problem to correct the paper. Thank for the help! Jack

Well boys,,, it wasn't easy. 2 hours with the DMV Sheriff. He was not going to be concvinced the CA78 on the frame was legit and he was sure the Engine S/N had to match the Vin.... Finally,,, he passed it... WHEW!! I am done buying anything with out of state titles..... crap!!!!!

Way to go, Jack. Now you have a title and bike where the numbers match. That two hours will be worth a lot if/when the bike gets sold.

You have also proven that with a little perseverance a guy can buy a bike from another state and get the title worked out.

My only suggestion is that before anyone purchases a bike without a title (in or out of state), get the frame number and ask your DMV to run a 50-state check to make sure it has never been reported stolen. If it has that is a TOTALLY different deal.

If you check before you buy, you will be out nothing.

If you check after you buy, the Sheriff or State Police will haul a stolen bike off and there will be nothing you can do about it.
