Handful of questions, 72 differences, +a chrome quote
I pulled everything back apart. Looks like I had some sense, but a poor memory.
I retained the original jets in the bike. I just changed out the float needle, holder, seals, and slide needle.
I cleaned everything out and put the old slide needles back in. One carb somehow had the float set too high. I don't know how that happened ;).
I'll start it tomorrow and see how it goes. I didn't have time to get it all back together (seat, etc) before it got dark.
Do the adjuster screws wear over time? I didn't swap out those either.

Got everything back together. Think it's better than before, but still problems at idle. Bike wants idle screws a turn or two from bottoming out. The only way I can get it to run with less is by pushing the mixture screw out. (2+ full revolutions at least). Going further out also erased the smoke. I pushed it pretty far out and got a flame out of one of the pipes.

Back in the 60's when these bikes were new there was a statement.

mips wrote:Pulled everything off, sanded down carb and base. Put the keyster idle jet in place just in case the old one wasnt good (cleaned it twice) it still needs idle screw turned nearly all the way in. Idle jet was 39'instead of the stock 38.
Ideas? I'm getting real tired of pulling things apart :(
Will recheck points tomorrow with a timing light. I did the static method you are known for. I have nos points , points plate, and condenser. I had focused on carb because it didnt appear to miss and seemed perfect at all but 0-1/8 throttle or so. I'll probably also get newer plugs (gnition)because these ones are probably tired of getting fouled.
