My '61 CB72
My '61 CB72Bought this POS 7 yrs ago and just brought it out of storage. It rolls through with compression so it should run, we'll find out shortly. Tank had a gallon of foul smelling bad gas from probably 30+ yrs ago and I must have dumped out 2lbs of rust. If it runs out okay maybe it should be my new "ratbike", I'll throw some parts at it to make it street legal.

The POS (Poor Old Sickle :) got parts thrown at it today. The kickstart gears were missing from the side cover, that's fixed. I decided to go ahead and put an electric starter back on too. It now starts to get interesting. No starter sprocket behind the rotor, removed the rotor and and find a CL crank seal. My first thought was a CL crank was installed, nope there's the sprocket oiling hole. Checked to see it the hole had been plugged, nope it's clear. You'd think this would have been an oily mess but it's about the normal crud in here. All the correct components have now been installed and now to install the kickstart cover. Now I'm thinking there was no spring the hold the kickstart shaft in place to keep the kickstart pawl released. Yep the pawl has been engaged while this thing was running and has worn out the pawl as it no longer engages. Now the cases have to be split for repair. In the mean time I'm going to continue on with trying to light it off, I'll just have use the electric start. I've also installed a toolbox, sidecovers, and headlight.

Correct shift linkage installed, electric starter works, cleaned points, and checked for spark which it has. Rolled it through with the starter and can hear the sound of compression from both cylinders. I'm going to pivot the engine down on the bottom rear bolts and pull the head cover to check the cam timing and adjust as needed, then clean a set of carbs. Hopefully I can light it off this weekend..........................................

Will it run????Saturday I dropped the engine down pivoting on the lower rear mounts, pulled the head cover and moved the cam timing one link. Adjusting bolt broke off the cam chain adjuster so I replaced the whole unit. I didn't realize the left cam had been replaced with a CL unit until now. Replaced the carbs with the round bowl PW22's. Changed out the cut off peg mounts, dug out a set of CB header pipes that had been extended (I can never seem to throw anything out!) welded some brackets on and mounted them to the footpeg brackets. Found a seat that really fits well with the "ratbike" theme of this bike. The moment of truth is about to happen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGKrSZa3 ... e=youtu.be

When I bought this "thing" I had one goal in mind and that was to make and hear it run. Now that that has been accomplished, it changed to make it a riding ratbike. Now that has changed some. I keep throwing parts at it. Though nowhere near correct it is slowly looking more like a Hawk.
It now has fenders, nice wheels, decent tires, wiring harness, starter solenoid, chain guard, centerstand, and will soon have a different set of forks. Still not sure what direction I'm going but I'm having fun! Dick Johnson
