"So how can I ensure I have 520 or 530? The cl77 '65 would be 530 definitely, correct?"
Your CL72-317xxx came from the factory with 520 chain and was manufactured in 1963. Most likely sold in '64 which is why your title is '64. Yes the '65 will have a 530 chain. Dick Johnson

Chain changeLike Dick said ..... in the middle of '64 when Honda changed over from eye to clevis lower rear shock's is when the chain changed from 520 to 530. But all CL72's came with 15/40 sprockets.
Tim Thanks for the input. Will get a 520 sprocket.
Another question ... What would cause one of these bikes to need the idle screw turned nearly all the way in to get a normal idle? I am maybe a full turn on both sides from all the way in. It is a one-kick bike to get started, but can have problems keeping idle even after warm and with varying choke. I've set timing (I think it's good), set valves New gas cap new air filters carbs rebuilt (used dreaded keyster kit, but parts fit OK) FYI, did vacuum test with a spare set of insulators. I wasn't confident that I wasn't introducing (or soon to introduce) a vacuum leak when I moved the fittings to hook up the guage, so I took 'em off.
I did not. I did spray carb cleaner around the intake with no change in symptoms. So I am assuming (hopefully correctly) that I don't have a leak.
I played with the bike for an hour or two today. Here is a "status update." Reset points manually. Put in new plugs, rechecked valves (one intake valve was a fraction too tight). Checked to make sure my carb needles were at the third position down. Here are the new symptoms I could use help with. Black smoke: Never seen before in the past few weeks I've had it running. I've noticed a small bit of oil near spark plugs before, and chalked it up to the aluminum head advisory from Honda. Wondering ... could a bit of oil have sneaked by and into the combustion chamber when I changed plugs? And if it did', wouldn't it have cleared up after a few moments? Great response at mid to high throttle. Sometimes chugs at no throttle. I had to give it a little throttle each time I stopped or slowed down much. Acts fuel starved. Pulled new plugs after a 10 minute ride and they were sooty. I have straight pipes no baffle. Not sure if that could be contributing and I need to readjust needles/etc. Greatly appreciate the help.
Are you using the original carburetor jets or the crap Keyster replacement parts? '65 YG1
