seem to recall, from my GCE physics, that magnets can become demagnetized by hammering or dropping them when the poles of the magnet are at a certain, distinct attitude to the earth's polar regions

Perhaps the polarity of the hammer head has some effect, either strengthening or weakening the magnetic field, depending on which end you use.

is this just a bolt that threads into the outer threads of the rotor bore and then tightens against the shaft? Are these tools available from dealers like Ohio Cycle or can you make one?

Just a bolt as you say will work just fine. I know Ohio Cycle sells a puller not sure how much but if you choose you can contact him and use the proper bolt.

i needed the tool/bolt before following e3steve's prescription in this string. not sure where to get the official tool, but was able to get an SAE metric drain plug 16mm x 1.5 pitch at the local True Value Hardware store for $3. worked great....
