Corrected CB wiring diagram & switch contacts' matrices

Post by e3steve » Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:21 pm

I noticed yet another error in the original Honda wiring diagram, corrected herewith. There should NOT be a connection, shown as a green wire link, between the headlamp switch brown and the meter lamps' green wire junction receptacles. I've edited the connection out of the equation. Bill Silver mentions a correction that he's had edited, but I can't find reference to it now.

The second pic here is a pair of schematic matrices showing how the CB/CL 5-wire lightswitch and the ignition switch operate. Terminal CH on the ig sw has no connection to any other at any time; it's purely a junction to connect the battery r/w (direct and unfused, which is why it's a fibre-covered cable) of harness 'A' (charging & ignition harness) to the rectifier red (sometimes r/w -- mine is), also fibre-covered or -sleeved, of harness 'B' (main harness). I suggest that this r/w cable should be fused also.

EDIT: it seems that some dimmer switch wiring -- my NOS included -- contains a green cable to the dimmer centre (common) contact, not brown as is shown in the diagram.

corrected wiring diagram

Thank you very much! I was about to ask this very question. Does this mean that the "CH" post is not needed but that a second red wire can be run from the rectfier + to "BA"? Again, thanks for the post. Karl

Yes, I guess so.

Actually, no, Karl. If you need to bypass term 'CH', wire the rectifier +ve straight to the battery terminal, via a 25-Amp fuse; the fuse will protect the harness against the rectifier shitting the bed and going short-circuit.

The reason to not connect the rec +ve to term 'BA' is: if the 'main' 15-Amp fuse fails whilst the motor is running, then the alternator will put unstabilised voltage >20VDC onto the electrical system. Adios lamps and, possibly, ignition system!

CB77 (1965) combination switch

Post by Ken184 » Wed Dec 26, 2012 2:38 pm

I'm going through 'really screwed up' wiring on the 65 CB77 i bought recently, and a number of things don't seem to match up with this very helpful string.
My combination switch doesn't have any terminal markings on it, and has 4 wires coming out-
Red from the battery through a fuse, which also jumps to a second terminal on the switch.
Brown/White which also comes from the battery but with no fuse
Brown which seems to connect to three wires(green, white, black) soldered together going into the harness
Black which connects only to the black wire running to the coils.

Can anyone decipher this?

Ken, that's almost certainly an aftermarket combi switch. Depending on how good you intend on making your CB, it's worth watching eBay for a NOS including the steering lock barrel.

If you're just refreshing a daily rider, I can help you to get it wired.

daily driver

Post by Ken184 » Wed Dec 26, 2012 6:04 pm

just a daily driver. the first question is why i have two wires from the battery coming to this switch. i'm guessing the red through the fuse is the BA terminal, but why the second wire with no fuse to another terminal on the switch?
