CL77 Oil Pump

Post by Raceman » Thu Dec 06, 2012 10:26 am

In servicing a CL77 project that I acquired in June, I took the oil pump out to check the screen. To my surprise, there was no screen installed on the pump. I have a screen in the spare parts bin, but was wondering, what would be the harm in running without one? Obviously, you lose the filtering of the screen, but does the screen control or affect the supply or flow to the pump? The screen is there for a reason, so I am installing it along with new gaskets. Just thinking out loud. Any thoughts?

Raceman,
Your thinking is correct. The sceen is there for protecting the pump and the 100 plus roller bearings just in the crankshaft alone. How does the pump look inside?

The screen is there to save the pump from any large chunks of debris. The flow after the pump is via the centrifugal filter which collects the smaller stuff and anything that got through the pump.

There are two ways to look at it. Either the screen is not required unless there's a major disaster or you see it as cheap insurance just in case.

A bigger issue is that the gears are designed to mesh to a certain depth with 2 gaskets and the screen. Removing a gasket or the scree will pull the pump closer to the crank and potentially create a wear situation.

I'd fit a screen.

The oil screen is actually an air separator to remove the air bubbles that end up in the oil through the motor and g/box churning the oil and yes the screen will filter larger chunks but by that time your engine is in a lot of trouble. All the best Jerry
