Top 5 newbie screwups?

I am about to pull the Cb77 engine, and remove the head to check specs and see if I can use stock pistons and rings, or need to go oversize.

What are the top five things that idiots like me screw up?

And keep in mind, I have pulled the engine before and replaced the advance springs, so what are my biggest screw up risks once I get the engine out and the lid off?

I have the Silver guide, and have read it carefully.

Hi,

I don't think that you will screw up anything after reading Mr. silver's bible.
However, assembly of Japanese motorcycles requires great peace of mind (Pirsig).

And if you treat your engine the same as you were reading, everything will be fine.

Thanks! I havn't reread Zen since highschool, so maybe I should before I start this.

I have one question.

Can you get to the head and hone and do the rings WITHOUT removing the cam shaft?

I have been reading up and am terrified of the cam removal process, based on what I have seen on the forum.

I hope this question doesnt demonstrate how totally clueless and unprepared I am.

There is still time for someone to give me a bid to do the rebuild :)

Hi,

Cams can stay in, valves stay in. But you have to get the cam chain off.
If the cam chain is an endless type, you have to cut it, if it is a chain with a link, it's easy.

If I lived nearby, I would say come over,

J, Don't be intimidated. You can do it. Just go slow and ask lots of questions. Pictures are really helpful. Guys like Jensen, LM, Davomoto and many others have put together a lots engines. They are generous with their time and expertise because they want you to have a success. Even those who don't post are cheering for you as we read of your trials and successes.

Go for it. Everything can be taken apart again to fix if it ain't right. Don't stress out and make it your therapy. When it roars back to life, that will be a good day. Look forward to it.

Thanks for the encouragement.

As soon as I finish the drive side oil seals on the 160, I am going to drop the 305 and start.

I will create a thread on it and post pictures.
