Chunk missing from engine case

I think I would do it with the seal in place and try not to cover the top of the seal as you might need to replace the seal some day.

Hi,

Crankcases should be repaired when empty, dry and clean.
The best way to it is by welding, the second best is JB weld.

The same for cylinder heads, cylinders.

That's my opinion,

Thanks Jensen.

But to my surprise it is NOT leaking out of the seal with a chunk missing.

Once I got it good and clean, I discovered it is leaking from behind the washer on the gear shift rod.

I assume there is a seal back behind the washer, but how do I get to it?

There seems to be a retaining ring holding the washer on, but it goes all the way around the rod, and I dont see how to remove it.

I think that you are looking at parts 21 and 7.

The seal is behind these.

Ok, I see it now, #21 on the schematic.

But my clip seems to go around 360, and I dont see how to get it off.

You probably need to rotate the circlip until you see the gap.
