Adjusting tappet clearance on 1964 CA77...

Post by sky1haze » Mon Oct 22, 2012 7:09 pm

Hello everyone,

I have finally built up enough courage to adjust the tappet clearance on a single point CA77.

I ligned the great wheel to the "T" position and found the side with the more loose rocker arms..... So I adjusted the clearance on the intake and out take to .001 mm...
Then I did a full rotation so The Golden pointer was again set at the "T" position... The other side was loose at the rocker arms, so I adjusted the clearance again to .001mm for the intake and out take...??????????????
Now there is a tapping sound coming from maybe the right side. When I open the tappet covers, there is oil. Is this healthy?
Does my top end just sound noisy???
It only has 6,500 miles...
Thanks all.
Yeah, the points and timing and the cam chain have been adjusted and condenser brand new. New plugs....D8HA,,,,,

The tappet clearance spec is .08 to .12mm or .004" (four thousandths of an inch). Not sure what you meant by .001mm. Sounds like your procedure was OK. Did you check the clearance again after you tightened the lock nut? How did it sound before you adjusted them? Oil is supposed to be behind the tappet covers.

Do you mean that you meant .1mm? Lotta difference between .1 and 1.

Maybe I'll go to a .08mm Just to see if there is less noise.
Thanks for clearing up that there is oil up in there!
