White smoke from left side over 5kyou may have a stuck or partially stuck ring(s). I have had this happen twice in the past. I added about 8 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil to the fuel tank and 8 oz to the crankcase. In both cases it freed up the rings and the smoking stopped. This was on two different bikes and I may have just gotten lucky. It was an old timer they told me about this. Cliff
I also run 10w40 , not a single cloud of smoke here.
No oil use, nothing. Run's like a charm. Maybe some parts are starting to go old, using thicker oil isn't a real solution. 'Of course I've already taken a very modest position on the monetary system, I do take the position that we should just end the Fed.' - Ron Paul
I am sure it wouldn't affect smoke in a properly running engine.
And I am not thinking as a final soultion. Just something to keep the EPA from shutting me down until the Winter tear down starts. We still have at least four good weeks of riding here before the freeze sets in, and I would hate to park it now. Surprising as it may seem 10w40 is thicker at elevated temperatures than 30w. Multigrade means what is says on the tin. Lower viscosity at low temps and relatively higher viscosity at higher temps. It just means that it doesn't get thin as quickly as mono grade.
Worn valve guides will create smoke on the overrun. Smoke while accelerating usually means worn trapped or broken rings. Fouling plugs will get worse as the condition gets worse. Initially it won't affect the plugs much. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
