Gas Tank Fuel Line Routing?

When I got my bike, it had clear plastic hose connecting both sides of the tank, and I don't think that was original. What I'm wondering now is whether the routing was original, or if there's a better way. On mine, there's a straight run of fuel line connecting the two halves of the tank. Efficient, but a pain in the neck when I want to remove the tank since it has to be drained first. Is it normal to have to drain the tank before removing it, or is there a different way of routing the cross-over fuel line?

Unfortunately that is the way honda did it. You can however install one of those quick disconnects in the line which help if you have to remove the tank much. Frankly I can't recall the last time I had to take mine off, it's been many many years.

Yes it is a pain in the butt to remove the tank with the line routed that way. The quick disconnect was pretty spendy so I routed mine over the frame to eliminate the need to do that. In later years of production, Honda eliminated the cross over tube entirely so I figured if I got that low on fuel, I'd have a little reserve on the left side. Not the "correct" way but it works. The crossover allows you to use the fuel in the left side bottom of your tank which would be trapped without the crossover. You can just plug the crossover tubes while you are shaking down your bike. Right side will still drain out through the petcock. Just remember the volume of your tank will be reduced a little.

With the above you will be able to remove the tank whenever you want. If you shut off the petcock and run the engine til it uses all the gas in the carb, you can remove the tank and will only spill a drop from the carb line instead of the enormous mess from dealing with the crossover tube. With the crossovers plugged, it is a good time to rebuild your petcock as well. With the tank off it is easier to drain and/or you can turn it on its left side easily to take the petcock off.

Once your bike is running like you want it to and you are riding instead of wrenching, you can put the crossover tube back on, but you will have the mess that one time.

Hi, I don't want to steal this thread, I just acquired a 305, and am trying to determine the proper routing for the hoses that come off the fuel tank petcock. I know which is the main and where it but the smaller line that comes off the petcock I am unsure about. Any help and/or photos would be greatly appreciated.

The crossovers connect together and there is one outlet from the petcock that connects to the carb if it OEM.

Hi, don't want to hijack this thread either but thought I'd quickly ask since it's sort of on topic ... I have to replace my throttle cable (it snapped) and would like to know if I have to remove the tank to get at the carb to attach the new cable?

I just got my '66 Dream, I'm not a mechanic so it's a little intimidating to hear that the gas tank has to come off (and just my luck, I had to eagerly fill it up last week too :).
