1965 305 CL77 all done but the start!

Post by abert51 » Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:26 am

OK, I did fairly careful top end job, new paint, tyres, brakes, cables, ya di ya di ya. Upon kicking it used to sputter now nothing, tough time getting the timing chain on just right and I was very careful to get the punch mark on the timing cam at 12 o'clock. I [think [/i] the intake valves were all the way out (compression stroke) and the rotor (point) was pointing at the "T" mark. Good bright blue spark both sides, clean clean carbs and tank. So why won't this tried and true motor start for me. All comments, tips, and suggestions are very much taken at face value with my appreciation.

Assuming all the head work, timing etc is correct, you have; 1) clean clean carbs, and 2) clean tank...OK. Do you have 3) fuel into the bowls? Are the plugs possibly fouled? Plugged gas cap vent? Now this will sound stupid, but is there sufficient fuel in the tank (ON vs. RES)? Also, check out Ed's tuning recipe and go through these steps to ensure your timing. And lastly, edit in your location for us. Hope it goes well.

T is TDC. You want the pointer at F which is 5 degrees BTDC. That means your bike's timing is now actually a little retarded. Not sure if that is enough to cause a problem starting, though.

Comments above by Mike re: timing, etc are spot on, but I would first just squirt some gas in the cylinders,to see if you get at least a sputter. If so, then follow his suggestions.

Let us know if this works! Only thing you should need is fuel and fire. Since you have a blue spark, then the gas will verify if you have another problem. Good Luck!

The points cam might be 180 degrees out, if you had removed the cams. Regards, Chase

I'd say others are offering good information.
Any reason you don't show your location with the profile area?
I might give you a call were I to see where you are located in that section. ............lm

Fresh Start

Eureka, the CL fired up nicely after I discovered I had the loosest valves this side of the PECOS. I guess I forgot to gap them properly and the valves were hardley opening. I guess a written checklist would help my freable mind. Thank you for all your responses and support. It's great and keep it going for the good of all. Big Al
