CA DMV & CHP

Post by davomoto » Fri Apr 20, 2012 2:38 pm

Hey all,

Been super busy putting the new shop together, and wrenching on bikes, as well as having a full time job!

I went to DMV to register a bike that had no records, out of system etc. They told me that they could do the VIN verification. I told them several times in the past, I was reffered to CHP. They insisted that they could do it. I brought the bike to DMV, they did the VIN verification, and I walked out with a plate and registration. Fast forward two weeks, and all of the paperwork comes back in the mail stating that CHP must do VIN verification, no kidding!

Wednesday I take it to the CHP, and the officer doing it has done several bikes for me in the past. He comes out from the back room shaking his head. we go outside, and he talls me the bike was stolen in San Francisco in 1969. Long story short, it turns out that I wrote down a 8 for the last number, and it was actually a 6. it all ended well, but man I thought I was losing the bike for sure!

DMV and VIN

Post by conbs » Fri Apr 20, 2012 5:04 pm

Davo, quite a story. Glad it ended well.

I bought a low miles '65 CA78 last fall. I got it from the original owner. I was just about to hand over the cash and my son noticed that the VIN number did not match the title. It was off by one digit. It had been that way since the gal bought the bike new in 1966 and no one had noticed - including me.

It turns out the guy at the DMV that handles my area owns a CA77 that was his fathers. He wanted to help. He told me what paperwork I needed and we got the sale completed. Having the original owner give an affidavit that it was indeed the bike she bought brand new was a big part of getting things resolved. It might have been a different story if my son had not noticed.

It was a lesson for me. You cannot be too careful when dealing with VIN numbers. Check it. Check it again. And when you are sure, check one more time, just to be sure you are sure.

Yes, how right you are! Just got back from the DMV, and the officer wrote that the bike is a 64, and the rest of the paperwork says 67. looks like another trip to CHP, and DMV. GRRRRRRRRR

For future reference, you can call the CHP and have them check the serial number to verify it wasn't reported stolen before you go to all the work of restoring the bike, at least that's what they told me when I tried to get mine registered. It wasn't in running condition at the time so the CHP wouldn't sign it off. Have to take it back to finish the paperwork later, hopefully before riding season is over.

If it didn't come equipped with turn signals when new I don't think there's a requirement that it have them now. Not sure, but pretty sure.
