Hi I am a new member and just started a restore project. I have been interested in restoring an old Honda for quite some time. I used to ride a 1967 Honda dream 305 as a kid and loved that bike. Just last week a coworker gave me a 1961 Super Hawk 305. It is “barnyard fresh” but all the parts are there. I cleaned the points and carburetors and she fired right up. Anyways I just wanted to introduce myself.

Welcome. You have alot of work to do but it looks like you have a good base to start from.

Thanks for the reply Firemanbob. I have a lot to do is right, but I am in no hurry it is a hobby. I already have a bike 1989 Harley, but I must say I dream of the day I will ride this Super Hawk! The funny thing is it got me motivated, and for the last several days I have been cleaning out the garage (amazing how much junk I collected). I really don’t expect to start on it until April. I have been researching the web. And getting a wealth of info.

This web site is awesome and it is fun to share the same interests. After researching the info on the Super Hawk I feel this bike is pretty much close to original. The big question I have is: Did the 1961 Super Hawk have an option for handlebars? From what I have read they came with the straight bars. Mine has the higher bell curve. Could that be original? I do have the title and it says 1961, plus the speedo/tach shows it to be a 1961 according to what I read on this site. Lastly, do you feel that being a 1961, the first year Honda introduced the Super Hawk will make this bike anymore significant than other Super Hawks?

Update 3-19-07: Finally cleaned garage out, amazing how much stuff I have collected (just throw it all out). Well fighting my urge to totally strip the bike down and do a complete restore, I have come up with a strategy. I plan on getting the bike running mechanically sound drive it awhile and later on do a complete restore. Today I pulled the tank off and using the rust removal method I read in VJMC using pool chemicals and a battery charger. It is making bubbles and a nasty foam, I guess I will see if it works by tomorrow. Also I pulled the carb’s and disassembled, I will soak in carb. Clean tank at work. The bowl gaskets where glued on, so I do not know if they will survive the soak. If not I believe I can make some with gasket material. I pulled the battery and will try to match up one at the auto store (will find out). My biggest hurtles will be to get a key, I got her running by hot wiring. I will try the classified ads on VJMC. Lastly I need to get rims and tires. One last thing I will need is a seat. Will update as I progress.
