Intro, and a little help

Post by mopower » Sun Mar 18, 2007 8:56 am

Hello,
I've just inherited (literally) a 1967 Honda CL77 that's in pretty good shape as far as I can tell. My father-in-law recently passed away and he was a bit of a pack-rat. I found this bike sitting under boxes of recyclable cardboard in a corner of his garage. It was last registered in 1973. It has some surface rust and the tires are rotted out, but everything else looks to be in great shape.

I have a clean title, the original manual, and an old newspaper clipping from the early 70s about buying late model motorcycles as an investment (I don't believe it was my father-in-laws intent to ever ride this thing). My biggest problem is I have no key! Being a pack-rat, we found several thousand keys in his house, but nothing for a Honda. From what I can tell, I'm going to need some sort of key before I can start further disassembly for cleanup, or to check what condition the motor's in.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to proceed? Should I try to get a locksmith out? Would I need to get a blank key first? Should I replace the entire tumbler assembly? If so, wouldn't I have to replace the assembly for the seat too?

Finally, I've got enough experience in cars - I restore 70s Mopars - but this will be my first whack at a motorcycle. The first thing I usually do with a car is get my hands on a factory service manual. Is there a market for that sort of thing with Honda bikes? If so, where? If not, what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mark

Hey Mark,

Welcome, I'm sure you'll like it here. loud mouse and others, will steer you right. Also good to have another Mopar man here to. I never restored any but, years ago, I have had a 66' Charger (383/4sp/posi) 69' road runner coupe & a 74' Royal Monaco (ex-state police car w/ 440 interceptor) along with a few others. When I got married, she had a 69' road runner also and that was how we met.
They're all gone now. Only Mopars in my yard now are an 06' Grand Caravan SXT and a 94' Grand Voyager LE. Yeah, only have the old ones in my memory and that is starting to fade. Ha!Ha! Enjoy the forums.
Later on, Bill

I did. Nothing there. Thanks though. For what it's worth, the tumbler says it's an NA366 key type. If I can get a blank, a locksmith should be able to create a new key from that, no?

Is there a number stamped on the face of the switch? If so I have a lot of the old pre-cuts. And if I don't have it there are others who may.
