oil leak help!

Post by skweezal » Sat May 12, 2012 10:55 pm

My Dream ran fine till last week (just an oil drip here and there, nothing you wouldnt expect from an old bike). 30 miles in we stopped at a gas station for fuel and noticed a BIG puddle under Dreamy...leaking like crazy and engine sounded rough. Parked her. Trucked her home and cleaned her up. Put alot of oil in and ran her (in and out of gear)...no leak. In taking things apart, there is a manufactured hole in the top of the case, on the right, in a channel near the bolt for the side cover....wondering if this hole should be plugged up (and it has lost it's plug?) or is this a normal breather hole? Is this part of the problem or not related at all?
Any insight is much appreciated! Trying to find an online engine diagram showing the above mentioned hole.
Many thanks!

A picture tells a thousand words. Does the side cover need to be off to see this hole?

Have you removed and replaced the top of the engine?
That is a hole for any fluids to come from the middle of the engine. ..........lm

see attached two pics. the bottom of the silver triangular side piece seems to fit over the hole.

I believe that hole is there to allow fluid that has accumulated in that area to escape out the bottom of the motor. However, that is not the source of your leak. Fluid up that high is coming from the cylinder/head area and gravity is delivering it there.

breather tube...

Post by skweezal » Sun May 13, 2012 9:03 pm

now we are thinking that the black rubber breather/overflow tube is where the oil hiccuped out of. We have ran it in gear and it's just fine now from a leaky standpoint but the engine is running rough and sort of metalic clanky sounding. Gonna take her in to the dream fixer tomorrow and let him sort it all out. thanks for all your insight and comments. I will let you know what the official diagnosis is!! :)

@ Loudmouse....answer is no....no engine work was done and top was not removed (sorry for not answering your query earlier).
